You Are Really the Best Doctor

Death of a stroller

For me, there is really nothing quite as satisfying as hearing the words, “Dr. Campbell, you are really the best doctor.” I was lucky enough to hear those words uttered by my patient today. I can’t give all the details, but the gist is that I discharged a patient today who had a very intense elevator phobia. She was literally stopped in her tracks with fear. I offered her support and medication, but she just couldn’t get on the elevator to exit the hospital. The other team members said that it just wasn’t possible to discharge a patient without having them go down the floors on an elevator. But I insisted. I had to make calls, make special requests, and escort the patient out of the patient out of the hospital myself. But guess what? She left without having to board the elevator. And then she told me the above words. Even though my job can be tiring, and many of my patients scream curse words at me and don’t appreciate anything that I do, every once in a while someone is appreciative. And really, that’s what it’s all about.
