Learning and the Drunk Tank

The Drunk Tank

Today was a good day. It started out early this morning, as always. I commuted 2 hours to the hospital only to stay for 2 hours worth of work. I then commuted another 2 hours back to my actual residency hospital. Thursdays we have didactics from 12:00 – 5:00. Although I hate sitting down for such long hours, I really do enjoy good ‘ole fashioned learning. We had our residency meeting, then a lecture on psychopharmacology, then a 2 hour session where we watched a psychologist interview a patient and then discussed the case afterwards. Residency may suck for some reasons, but the primary reason that it doesn’t suck is because you work AND get paid, but also get to learn. It’s really a great combination, when you think about it.

Today I had a nurse demand that I write several orders for a patient. I’m still getting used to saying no to nurses at times. Sometimes, they have incredibly wonderful suggestions, but sometimes they fail to really understand the entire situation, and make demands, which are unreasonable. Sorting through all this confusion continues to be a learning experience for me.

Since I got home a little early today, I decided to use my time wisely and do my weekly cleaning of my apartment. I work tomorrow and am on call on Saturday and only have Sunday to catch up on other errands.

After my cleaning session I walked my dogs in the pouring rain. So as not to disrupt my clean apartment with 2 soaking wet, stinky, muddy doggies, I used my new doggy gate to isolate my doggies in what I like to refer to as the “drunk tank.” (Photo above.) It worked like a charm. My apartment remains clean, and my mind remains comforted.

Nice doggies. Great, informative blog, btw. The resident viewpoint takes me back…
